One of Europe's most striking memento mori — the exterior walls of the 18th-century Igreja da Nossa Senhora do Carmo are lined with bones and skulls of 1,245 monks from the adjacent cemetery, arranged decoratively to remind the living of their mortality. Disturbing and beautiful in equal measure.
