Kyoto's best-known geisha district, on both sides of Shijo-dori east of the Kamo River. Walk Hanamikoji, lined with wooden teahouses, and the canal-side lanes of Shirakawa in the early evening as the lanterns come on. Some private lanes off Hanamikoji are now closed to tourists, and photographing geiko or maiko without permission isn't allowed — follow the signs and enjoy the wander.
