A preserved merchant quarter south of Sarusawa Pond, with narrow lanes of wooden machiya townhouses whose lattice fronts hide craft shops, cafés, sake breweries and small museums. Many houses hang red 'migawari-zaru' charms for protection. Free exhibits such as Naramachi Koshi-no-Ie let you step inside a traditional townhouse.
