The car-free stretch on the east bank of the Ganges around Ram Jhula, lined with ashrams, temples, Ayurvedic pharmacies and stalls selling rudraksha beads, incense and spiritual books. Parmarth Niketan and Chotiwala are here, and the Beatles Ashram is at its southern end. It's easy to wander alone for an afternoon — just share the lanes with the cows and watch for monkeys.

Most of the drop-in classes, teacher trainings and backpacker hostels are here, which makes it the easiest part of town to meet other solo travellers.
