The 100-acre estate of sal forest includes the restored Viceregal Palace, built in 1910–11, and stays centre on Ayurveda, yoga and meditation programmes with Himalayan views. A serious — and very expensive — wellness splurge.

Zostel Rishikesh

A branch of Zostel, India's biggest backpacker hostel chain, on the hillside in Tapovan with views over the Ganges and the surrounding hills. There are dorms, private rooms and tents, plus a common lounge, rooftop terrace and shared kitchen — the kind of social spaces that make it one of the easiest places in Rishikesh to meet other solo travellers.

Live Free Hostel

A backpacker hostel on Laxman Jhula Road in Tapovan, about 700m from the old Laxman Jhula crossing and right in the part of Rishikesh where most yoga schools, cafés and travellers are. There are dorms and private rooms and a relaxed common area, and the location makes it easy to walk to classes, cafés and the river — well suited to long stays and first-time solo visitors.

Hotel Ganga Kinare

A riverside boutique hotel open since 1989 and known for its own private ghat on the Ganges, where guests can join a small aarti or bathe in the river. It's on the Virbhadra Road side of Rishikesh, away from the crowds of Laxman Jhula and Tapovan, and has an in-house restaurant, Jal & Jalebi. A calm mid-to-upper-range base for a slower stay.
