India's first destination spa, opened in 2000 in the palace estate of the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal at Narendra Nagar, in the hills above Rishikesh. The 100-acre estate of sal forest includes the restored Viceregal Palace, built in 1910–11, and stays centre on Ayurveda, yoga and meditation programmes with Himalayan views. A serious — and very expensive — wellness splurge.

A backpacker hostel on Laxman Jhula Road in Tapovan, about 700m from the old Laxman Jhula crossing and right in the part of Rishikesh where most yoga schools, cafés and travellers are. There are dorms and private rooms and a relaxed common area, and the location makes it easy to walk to classes, cafés and the river — well suited to long stays and first-time solo visitors.

Hotel Ganga Kinare

A riverside boutique hotel open since 1989 and known for its own private ghat on the Ganges, where guests can join a small aarti or bathe in the river. It's on the Virbhadra Road side of Rishikesh, away from the crowds of Laxman Jhula and Tapovan, and has an in-house restaurant, Jal & Jalebi. A calm mid-to-upper-range base for a slower stay.
