Skopje is one of the Balkans' most entertaining and slightly surreal solo destinations — the "Skopje 2014" urban renewal project built enormous classical statues and baroque-style facades over what was originally a 1960s socialist city, creating a bizarre and fascinating architectural collision. The Old Bazaar (Čaršija) is one of the Balkans' most authentic. Very affordable, very safe, and Macedonians are genuinely warm and curious about visitors.

Traditional Macedonian and Albanian food in the old bazaar — the restaurants serving tavče gravče (baked beans), ajvar, stuffed peppers, and grilled meats in hans (Ottoman caravanserais) around the bazaar charge prices from another era. The mixed meze (shopska, ajvar, white cheese, peppers) with rakia is the best meal in Skopje.
