Tokyo is arguably the world's best solo travel city β solo dining is completely normalised (ramen and sushi counters, conveyor belt restaurants, standing noodle bars), the train system is impeccably efficient, and the sheer density of things to explore means you could spend weeks without running out of extraordinary neighbourhoods. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Yanaka, Shimokitazawa β each is a different world. The 7-Eleven and convenience store culture means you're never without excellent food at 3am.

Opened in 2012 by Backpackers' Japan, its big ground-floor lounge is a cafΓ© by day and a bar from 6pm, drawing locals as well as guests β one of the easiest places in Tokyo to fall into conversation over a drink.

The Shinjuku sky-hotel made famous by 'Lost in Translation', occupying the top floors of a tower in Nishi-Shinjuku.
