A cluster of narrow lanes beside Shinjuku Station's west exit that grew out of a postwar black market. Around 60 tiny bars and eateries, mostly yakitori and grilled offal counters, seat a handful of people each under lanterns and clouds of smoke. Squeeze onto a stool, order a few skewers and a beer, and you'll soon be chatting with the person next to you.
