Gyeongju is South Korea's most historically rich city — the entire city is essentially an open-air museum with royal Silla burial mounds scattered through the city centre, and Bulguksa temple (UNESCO) is extraordinary. Rent a bicycle to explore the royal tumuli park and Anapji pond independently. Very manageable as a solo day trip from Busan or Daegu. Very few international tourists compared to Seoul or Jeju.

A row of restaurants between Daereungwon and Wolseong serving ssambap, Gyeongju's signature meal: rice with a big basket of fresh leaves, doenjang stew and a table full of banchan side dishes, all wrapped into bites by hand. Most places serve sets for two or more, so ask about a single portion or share with a travel companion.

The original shop of Gyeongju's most famous pastry, first baked in 1939 by Choi Yeong-hwa and run by the same family for three generations. The small round buns have a thin, egg-washed crust stamped with a pattern and a generous sweet red-bean filling. They're best eaten warm, and boxes make a classic gift to carry home.
