Rishikesh is the yoga capital of the world and one of India's most solo-friendly destinations — the ashram culture means solo travelers are the norm, the Laxman and Ram Jhula suspension bridges connect the two banks socially, and the white-water rafting groups solo travelers naturally. The cafés along the ghats are excellent solo sitting spots. Very safe for solo women by Indian standards. The evening Ganga Aarti here is beautiful and less overwhelming than Varanasi.

A Rishikesh institution just off Ram Jhula at Swarg Ashram, open since 1958 and famous for its vegetarian thalis — rotis, dal makhani, paneer, kadhi and rice on one plate. Look for the man sitting outside with a painted face and a long choti (topknot), ringing a bell: he's the restaurant's living mascot and happy to pose for photos. A classic first meal in town.

A popular traveller café in Tapovan near Laxman Jhula, serving big breakfasts, Israeli and continental dishes and North Indian food from morning until late. There's outdoor seating and live music on some weekend evenings, and the easy, sociable atmosphere makes it one of the better places in Rishikesh to fall into conversation over a long meal.

A good choice for a sunset dinner or a quieter evening on the town's south side.
