Chiang Mai is arguably Southeast Asia's best solo traveler city β the Sunday Walking Street market, the Thai cooking class scene (the best icebreaker activity in Asia), the coworking spaces in Nimman Road, and the surrounding mountains with Doi Inthanon and the hill tribe villages make it extraordinary. The elephant sanctuaries (ethical ones β avoid riding) are outstanding half-day experiences that group solo travelers. Very affordable, very English-friendly.

Sunday Walking Street (Wualai)

Chiang Mai's best walking street market β Wualai Road comes alive every Sunday evening when the entire street becomes a pedestrianised market of northern Thai crafts, silverwork (the street is the historic silver-smithing quarter), handmade fabrics, street food, and live folk music. Wat Chedi Luang

The most impressive temple in Chiang Mai's Old City β a massive ruined chedi (stupa) dating to 1391, once standing 90 metres tall before being damaged by an earthquake in the 1540s. The Emerald Buddha was housed here until 1475. Today the temple complex is home to the City Pillar and a unique 'Monk Chat' programme where visitors can speak with Buddhist monks daily.
